BME LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE MEETINGS

WITH LOCAL LEGISLATORS

On September 18, 2024, a group of BME residents met with Assemblyman Gandolfo and NYS Senator Weik to discuss quality-of-life concers for the residents of our community.  Approximately 33 people attended this meeting which was arranged by resident Kevin Barry.

Several issues were discussed, including our efforts to have a guide rail installed behind the Alexander Court and Johnny's Path homes that back up to the South Sunrise Service Road.  In addition, a request for a noise barrier wall for noise and air pollution abatement was discussed.

The legislators were receptive to our concerns and Senator Weik has spearheaded the creation of an action committee with a select group of BME residents and local officials to address these concerns.  We have been asked to create a list of our concerns to be used at a meeting of this action committee on October 8, 2024.

The list includes requests such as:  closer monitoring of truck traffic violating the 5,000 lb. weight limit on Church Street and the need for larger, better placed signage; speed control on Church Street, such as added stop signs and/or speed bumps; greater presence of the SCPD to monitor speed on Church Street; air quality testing along the South Sunrise Service Road; and continued interaction with NYSDOT for additional traffic studies to prove that a guide rail is needed along the stretch of roadway from Church Street to the end of our property along the South Service Road.  The committee has also called attention to the potential danger and increase of vehicle accidents once Bayport Gardens is complete.  These new residents' only access to their community will be directly off the service road.  To date, there is no plan for an added entrance lane, and Bayport Gardens residents will be making a 90-degree right turn directly from the service road into their community.

Further information will be posted as we make progress on any of the items listed above.  Stay tuned!

DID YOU KNOW?  IN THE PERIOD FROM JANUARY, 2020 - MARCH, 2023, THERE HAVE BEEN MORE THAN 100 TRAFFIC ACCICENTS WITH AT LEAST ONE FATALITY ON THE SOUTH SUNRISE SERVICE ROAD DIRECTLY BEHIND OUR BOUNDARY?

This information was obtained via FOIL from the SCPD by our Legislative Committee.
